The leader of a wolf pack galloped through the crisp
morning air. “Chaci!” Kacha barked at Chaci as she ran
toward him. “Pukai is attacking the elders again, and I can’t
get him to stop.”
Chaci rolled his eyes and said, “How about Rica? Can
she stop him?”
Kacha said worriedly, “This is serious. He is going to
hurt someone.”
Chaci agreed to come, and he and Kacha trotted back to
the pack. A scary sight met Chaci’s eyes as he entered the
pack’s territory. The ring of elders was there as always, but
all of the elders were snarling. Chaci heard one of the elders
saying, “You shall be a cast-away for the rest of your life for
attacking us, Pukai. Now leave!” All of the elders began to
chant. A fog settled and disappeared as they finished
chanting.
Chaci ran to the elders and said, “What have you done!
Where is my son?”
Cari stepped out of the ring and said, “We have cast
away Pukai for attacking us.”
Chaci snarled and said, “You should have asked me!
Where did you send him?”
Cari said, “We have sent him to War Dog’s territory.” Chaci stiffened and growled, “You have sent him to
War Dog! Cari, I never want to see you again! Leave now!”
Chaci was furious.
“Chaci, calm down. You can go get him from War Dog
and come right back,” said Kacha.
Chaci said, “Good idea, Kacha. I’ll put you in charge.
I’m leaving immediately.” Then he departed.
Soon after Chaci left, he heard a howl. Chaci howled
back. He had no idea there was a lone wolf near his territory.
“Where are you?” howled Chaci.
“By the river. Who are you?” howled the lone wolf.
“I am Chaci of the Alpha pack. Who are you?”
The lone wolf howled, “I am Battle Fox, son of War
Dog. I ran away from him after he almost killed a pack
member.”
Chaci ran to the river and said to Battle Fox, “I am
going to War Dog to get my son back. Do you want to go
with me?”
Battle Fox agreed and headed off with Chaci. After an
hour, they had
reached the Caves of Agony. “To get through, we have to
battle a dragon,” said Battle Fox.
“Okay, be ready in battle stance at all times,” said
Chaci.
They crouched low and crept into the caves.
Everything was silent and pitch dark. Suddenly, everything
grew hot and bright.
The dragon! He was a huge fire-breathing dragon! The
dragon had fire-red scales and orange eyes.
Chaci and Battle Fox crouched even lower than they
already were. Battle Fox sprang and landed on the dragon’s
head. Then Chaci leaped onto the dragon’s back. Chaci
yelled over the dragon’s roar, “One! Two! Three! Bite!” Battle Fox and Chaci bit hard on the dragon. The
dragon roared in agony and flung them out of the cave. “We
made it!” cheered Chaci as he got to his feet.
Battle Fox didn’t move. “Battle Fox?” Chaci said
worriedly. He nudged Battle Fox with his nose. “Speak to
me! Move! Do something!” Chaci said with tears in his
eyes.
Battle Fox blinked.
Chaci said, “Battle Fox, are you alright?”
Battle Fox said, “I’m fine. What about you? You look
different.”
As Battle Fox got to his feet, Chaci went to a puddle
and looked at his reflection. Sure enough, he looked
different. Instead of his usual blue eyes, they had turned to a
glowing gold, and his black paws were so white that they
looked like he had dipped them in snow. “Odd,” thought
Chaci as he walked back to Battle Fox.
“Ready to go?” asked Battle Fox.
Chaci nodded, and they set off.
“Now we have to go through the Forest of Nightmares
and battle the dark dragon,” said Battle Fox.
“We’re about a kilometer away,” said Chaci.
Suddenly, a scream broke the silence. Chaci and Battle
Fox went into battle stance. They were in front of the Forest
of Nightmares! They crept in. Ghosts swirled out of
nothingness, and bones danced and shrieked. A swishing
above made Chaci and Battle Fox look up. A shadow
swooped to the ground in the front of the two wolves.
The dark dragon! It had glowing red eyes and bat’s
wings. It was more a shadow than a dragon. Chaci bit it, but
he went right through it! Battle Fox howled. The dark
dragon became more dragon.
“That’s it! Howl some more until it becomes a
dragon!” cried Chaci. Chaci and Battle Fox howled until the dark dragon was a
dragon and not a shadow. Chaci and Battle Fox charged.
They bit the dragon hard. The dragon shrieked in agony and
let them pass.
After he exited, Chaci felt a slight tingling in his chest.
He looked at it and saw it had turned as white as his paws.
He suddenly knew what was happening. He was turning
into the legendary white wolf!
“Battle Fox!” Chaci yelled excitedly. “I’m turning into
the white wolf!”
Battle Fox said, “Awesome! Now once we fight the
earth dragon, you will be the complete white wolf!”
As they trotted off, Chaci said, “How come we only
battle dragons?”
Battle Fox said, “If we take a different path, we have to
battle the tigan.”
Chaci said, “What’s a tigan?”
“A tigan is a human with a tiger head and tail,” said
Battle Fox.
“Let’s go that way,” said Chaci.
“If you really want to,” said Battle Fox.
On the way to the tigan’s lair, they passed through the
Earth Tunnel. The Earth Tunnel was exactly what it sounds
like: an earth tunnel. When they exited, they found
themselves in front of the tigan! The tigan roared and lunged
toward Battle Fox and Chaci. They dodged then struck.
They tore at the tigan’s flesh with their claws. The tigan fell.
The two wolves rushed to War Dog’s camp.
“I want my son back!” Chaci said to War Dog.
“Of course you can have him if I can live in your pack.”
War Dog said, “My pack deserted me because of a
misunderstanding. They thought I hurt a pack member when
I didn’t.”
“Sure,” said Chaci. “Pukai, you’re going home!”
Pukai ran over. “I can teleport us there,” said War Dog. He cast the
teleportation spell, and they were home.
Suddenly, Battle Fox said, “You’re the full white wolf,
Chaci!”
